A former cinema in Maryport is set to reopen next month as a new entertainment venue and business hub, following a £12m regeneration project. The Carlton, on Senhouse Street, now features a ground-floor performance space along with seven upper-floor offices and workshops available to rent.

The project forms part of Cumberland Council’s wider regeneration of the town, funded by the council, the Government, and Sellafield Ltd. Maryport Horizons Community Interest Company will run the site, which also includes a once-derelict neighbouring building, on behalf of the council.

The venue opens next month, with performances planned later in the year. Seven unfurnished, wheelchair-accessible offices on the first floor are up for rent, alongside volunteering and work opportunities.

Cumberland Council leader Mark Fryer welcomed the completion of The Carlton, saying it would boost the Maryport economy and benefit the wider Cumberland area. He said partnerships with groups like Maryport Horizons and new venues like this help make town centres places people want to live, work and visit.

Tracey West, head of social impact at Sellafield Ltd, said the firm was proud to back a project with lasting benefits for Maryport, with its £400,000 investment reflecting the Social Impact Multiplied programme’s focus on regeneration and enterprise. She said she expects the venue to grow into a hub for entertainment, enterprise, and community activity.

Maryport Horizons director Catherine Eve said the project aims to revitalise the local economy, drawing people who spend money in town and helping local businesses thrive.
