Background
OpenAI has launched ChatGPT Atlas, a new web browser that includes its ChatGPT assistant directly in the browsing experience. Instead of switching between tabs or tools, users can now ask ChatGPT questions, get summaries, and complete tasks, all within the same window.
OpenAI says Atlas is a browser centered around ChatGPT, designed to help users conduct research, read, and work more efficiently. The AI can understand what’s on a web page and assist in real time, for example, by summarizing articles, finding information, booking appointments, or collecting research notes without leaving the site.
One of the main features of Atlas is memory integration. ChatGPT can remember what users did during past visits or ongoing projects. For instance, it can recall job listings a user viewed earlier or continue research from where they left off. OpenAI has assured that this memory is fully optional; users can view, delete, or turn it off anytime.
Agent Mode is now available in the browser. It lets ChatGPT perform multi-step tasks, such as filling out online forms or searching for products. To stay safe, it cannot run code, install add-ons, or access files outside the browser. It also stops automatically on sensitive pages, like email and banking sites.
OpenAI is looking forward to launching more features in the near future, such as multi-profile support, developer tools, and seamless app integration. It is also developing new web standards to ensure websites function seamlessly with AI tools.
Currently, ChatGPT Atlas is available to macOS users on every ChatGPT plan. Business, Enterprise, and Edu users can access it in beta, while Windows, iOS, and Android versions will launch soon. Users can easily import bookmarks, passwords, and history from their old browsers.
