Key Background

US giant Chobani Greek yogurt is taking a record $1.2 billion investment to construct a 1.4 million-square-foot, state-of-the-art natural food manufacturing campus in Rome, Oneida County, New York. The campus will be largest ever built for America’s natural food manufacturing sector. It will employ more than 1,000 new workers, which will enhance the local workforce and economy.

The plant will be situated in the Griffiss Business and Technology Park location “Triangle” on previously invested-in land receiving over $23 million in capital investment through the state’s FAST NY program. Capital investment is on the way, and infrastructure upgrade of a necessary kind, i.e., transportation improvement and addition of utility, will position the property for the state’s potential to take advantage of the plant to support collosal manufacturing.

Operationally, the factory will have the ability to produce more than 12 million pounds of milk in a day in total. This would become historic in meeting the state’s demand of milk, providing new economic opportunity to the state farmer, and therefore making New York once again one of the country’s top yogurt manufacturers. More than one billion pounds of dairy commodity will be manufactured by the factory on an annual basis.

Governor Kathy Hochul hailed the announcement, highlighting how this initiative renews Upstate New York’s manufacturing prowess and highlights the state’s business-friendly image. Chobani founder and CEO Hamdi Ulukaya reiterated the company’s mission to community-driven growth, sustainability, and deepening its connections with local producers. The facility will include a workforce development plan targeting veterans and underrepresented groups, reflecting Chobani’s inclusive hiring approach and strong community values.

This daring action by Chobani not only changes food manufacturing capacity but also has New York State roots—its US base—and puts the natural foods company into orbit.
