Background
Google is extending its Nano Banana AI model of the Gemini app to Google Search and Lens and is providing users with new options to create and edit pictures with AI. The update is currently rolling out for Android users in the United States through the AI Mode Search Lab.
The Nano Banana model, known for its realistic and creative image generation, now works with the Gemini 2.5 Flash Image system inside Search. A new ‘plus’ icon has been added at the bottom-left of the prompt box in Search’s AI Mode. When tapped, it shows three options: Gallery, Camera, and Create Images, with the last one marked by a banana emoji.
By choosing Create Images, users can type a short description to make a picture from scratch or upload an image for editing. The final images include a Gemini spark watermark, showing that they were made with Google’s AI tools.
Google Lens is also getting a new ‘Create’ tab to help users take AI-powered selfies or generate images instantly. This feature leads straight to the front camera, where users can take photos and tell how they would like them to appear.
According to the company, this is one of the rollouts under its strategy to integrate the AI tools in all its products so that users can create, edit, and share visuals with less effort. It is likely that in the next few months, global expansion and language upgrades will be implemented as Google keeps creating more interconnected AI experiences.
