Background

On Thursday, OpenAI CEO Sam Altman said the company is on track to earn more than $20 billion in yearly revenue this year as it grows quickly in the AI industry. He also said OpenAI plans to reach hundreds of billions in yearly revenue by 2030, supported by large investments in infrastructure.

The company recently signed more than $1.4 trillion in deals to expand its AI data centers, which are essential for meeting the growing global demand for AI technology. Investors are questioning how the company will fund these projects.

“We are building the infrastructure for a future economy powered by AI,” Altman said in a post on X (formerly Twitter). “Massive infrastructure projects take time to build, so we have to start now.”

Founded in 2015 as a nonprofit research lab, OpenAI became one of the world’s fastest-growing tech firms following the 2022 launch of ChatGPT. The company is currently valued at $500 billion, though it remains unprofitable.

Earlier, OpenAI CFO Sarah Friar clarified that the company is not seeking a federal backstop for its investments, after her earlier remarks sparked political discussion. Altman also confirmed that OpenAI does not want government guarantees, adding, “If we get it wrong, that’s on us.”

Altman emphasized that the company’s focus is on building AI infrastructure for long-term growth, saying the market, not the government, will decide the outcome of their efforts.
