Background

Runware, a startup focused on real-time AI media generation, has raised $50 million in a Series A funding round led by Dawn Capital. The round also included participation from Comcast Ventures, Speedinvest, Insight Partners and a16z Speedrun, bringing the company’s total funding to $66 million.

Founded in 2023 by Flaviu Radulescu and Ioana Hreninciuc, Runware began after Radulescu noticed that existing text-to-image tools were powerful but slow. The company built a platform that lets developers generate images, videos, and audio instantly through a single API, without needing to maintain infrastructure or multiple model integrations.

Runware says its system has already powered over 10 billion creations for more than 200,000 developers. At the core of the platform is its Sonic Inference Engine, which runs on custom AI hardware and supports real-time inference for open-source models. The company also works with third-party AI cloud providers to automatically reroute workloads when more memory is required.

Hreninciuc, who leads operations and go-to-market, said Runware stays competitive by offering cost-effective pricing and high speed. The company charges users for the number of assets they generate, so they only pay for what they use, instead of paying for GPU compute time.

Runware currently supports over 400,000 models and aims to scale that number to more than 2 million with the new funding. The team, now around 25 people, plans to expand as the company moves into more AI modalities.

The startup sees itself competing with companies like Fal.ai and Replicate as investor interest in developer-focused AI tools continues to grow. Runware’s long-term goal is to become the main API layer for generative AI, giving developers faster and more affordable access to advanced models.
