Amazon is in advanced discussions with OpenAI that could see the tech giant invest as much as $50 billion in the artificial intelligence company, a move that may significantly enhance Amazon’s digital assistant, Alexa, and other internal AI-driven projects.

Sources familiar with the matter said OpenAI’s models are being considered to support Alexa+, Amazon’s revamped voice assistant designed to compete with leading conversational AI platforms. While Amazon currently relies on a mix of in-house systems and third-party models, the potential collaboration would give the company access to some of the most advanced AI capabilities in the market.

At present, Amazon routes much of Alexa+ traffic through its own Nova models, while more complex queries are often handled by Anthropic’s Claude, a rival AI system backed by Amazon through an $8 billion investment. Amazon has previously stated that Alexa+ is model-agnostic, allowing it to draw on different AI models depending on the task.

The proposed deal could also benefit OpenAI, which may gain access to Amazon’s custom AI chips and computing infrastructure as part of the arrangement. Executives from both companies, including Amazon CEO Andy Jassy and OpenAI CEO Sam Altman, are said to be directly involved in the discussions.
