Background
The investment of up to $25 billion by Amazon in Anthropic will go into improving infrastructure for artificial intelligence. This comes after the $8 billion that the firm has already put into the startup.
As per the deal, Anthropic has pledged to spend more than $100 billion on Amazon Web Services technologies in the next ten years. This includes the use of Amazon’s custom AI chips, Trainium, for training and deploying its Claude AI models. The company has also secured up to 5 gigawatts of capacity to support its growing AI operations.
Amazon’s CEO Andy Jassy said that Anthropic’s decision to run its models on AWS infrastructure reflects progress in custom chip development and ongoing collaboration in generative AI. The investment includes an immediate $5 billion, with up to $20 billion linked to future milestones.
Anthropic stated that rising demand for its Claude models from enterprises and consumers has put pressure on its systems. CEO Dario Amodei said the partnership will help scale infrastructure and improve performance while supporting further research.
The deal follows in the footsteps of intense rivalry among large tech companies seeking to increase their capabilities in developing AI technology. Amazon has invested heavily in its infrastructure during the current year. Anthropic has been able to grow quickly since its inception in 2021 and has been generating more than $30 billion in revenue per year.
Anthropic continues to collaborate with different organizations such as Microsoft and Google.
