Background:

South Korean carmaker Hyundai Motor Group plans to use human-like robots in its factories starting in 2028, taking a big step in modernizing manufacturing.

The company showed Atlas, a humanoid robot made by Boston Dynamics, at the Consumer Electronics Show (CES) in Las Vegas. Hyundai, which owns a majority stake in Boston Dynamics, said it intends to integrate Atlas robots across its global production network, including its key facility in Georgia, USA.

Designed for general industrial use, Atlas can work alongside human employees while autonomously managing machinery. Hyundai said the robots will help reduce physical strain on workers, handle dangerous tasks, and encourage wider use of robotics in factories. The company did not reveal how many robots it will start with or the cost of the project.

Hyundai Vice Chair Jaehoon Chang acknowledged that some jobs might be affected but stressed that people will still be needed to train and supervise the robots. Other companies like Tesla, Amazon, and China’s BYD are also investing in humanoid robots for industrial work.

This announcement follows Hyundai’s 2025 plan to invest over $20 billion in the United States, expanding car production. The Georgia battery plant, run with electronics company LG, is one of Hyundai’s key facilities in the US.

Hyundai’s new robot program aims to make factories safer, more efficient, and keep the company competitive.
